In 1995, Kevin Martin, C.E.T., and Craig Baker, P.Eng., co-founded First Nations Engineering, driven by a shared vision to deliver high-value engineering services to First Nation communities while fostering meaningful employment and training opportunities for Indigenous people in the civil engineering field.

From a team of three to nearly 50 over the past 30 years, Craig and Kevin have played a vital role in shaping the company’s growth and its impact on First Nations communities across Canada. Their leadership has guided the development of critical infrastructure projects, including water treatment plants, wastewater collection and treatment systems, roads, buildings, and, more recently, Asset Management Planning and E-ACRS Asset Condition Reporting. Equally important has been their commitment to mentoring and developing the next generation of engineers and technical professionals. Many team members have built long, dedicated careers with the company, while others have gone on to pursue paths better suited to their evolving goals, each shaped by the guidance, training, and leadership that Craig and Kevin have consistently provided.

“As a young materials engineer in 1998, I was eager to move closer to home in Six Nations. Kevin and Craig welcomed me to the company and quickly immersed me in the world of civil engineering. I am truly grateful for their guidance and for the confidence they placed in me early on in my career.” — Justin Gee, P. Eng., MCIP., RPP., President, First Nations Engineering Services Ltd.

After three decades of unwavering commitment and service, Craig announced in the spring of 2025 that he would be retiring from his role as General Manager to focus on his family.

“I’ve had a long and rewarding career; 45 years! While the work is not done, it’s time for a new generation with fresh perspectives and ideas to take the lead. I’ll remain available to share my insight for as long as I am able but I’m excited to see what Justin, Stephen, Taylor, and the rest of the team accomplish in the years ahead.” — Craig Baker, P.Eng., Former General Manager, First Nations Engineering Services Ltd.

With strong confidence in the company and the team they built, Kevin announced shortly thereafter that he would be transitioning from his role as President, passing the title to Justin Gee, in order to focus on the continued growth of his other company, K.L. Martin & Associates Corp.

“I never imagined I would own a civil engineering firm. I had K.L. Martin & Associates, and we were doing meaningful work for our communities. Craig convinced me to help bring his vision of operating an engineering firm to life, and I’m grateful he did. I couldn’t be more proud of what FNESL has accomplished, and continues to accomplish for its clients. They have a diverse and well-rounded team that approaches every project no matter the size with dedication, and I am confident the company is in excellent hands.” — Kevin Martin, C.E.T., Former President, First Nations Engineering Services Ltd.

First Nations Engineering Services is deeply grateful for their leadership, mentorship, and lasting contributions to both the company and the communities we serve. Our team is proud to have worked alongside Kevin and Craig and looks forward to continuing to benefit from their insight and guidance in their new roles as Senior Advisors.
